I have an HP 5100C parallel port scanner that I'm trying to get working.
I installed the ppscsi driver, and scanimage recognizes the device, but it
won't complete a scan.

I run scanimage with the command

scanimage -d hp:/dev/sg0 > testscan

Then X freezes for a few seconds while the scanner makes noises, then the
noises stop and X unfreezes, and after a few more seconds, scanimage
returns with the message:

scanimage: sane_read: Error during device I/O

Here is the relevant part of /var/log/messages:

It could be possible that this is a hardware problem. I got the scanner
for free and was told about a minor glitch that sounded hardware-related.

Thanks,
Ben
