We have discussed this two or three times during the last years and
came to the conclusion to don't do it. One point is, that we avoid
having users who selected the wrong backends (e.g. the SCSI instead of
the USB bckend or similar issues).
Another one is, that the idea of SANE ist to just plug in a new
scanner and be able to use it without recompiling.

If the problem is only the time for loading the shared libraries of
each backend, it's better to disable the other backends in dll.conf in
my opinion.

If it's really necessary to disable backends (e.g. really small
system), the way mentioned above seems easy enough IMHO.
