I just read your post here, the answer to your question regarding dust
removal is: it's tricky.

The current coolscan driver allows you to use RGBI as an image type,
but it will only work after patching the SANE source code. Also, it
only makes sense when you output the image straight into GIMP, in
which case the infrared channel appears as the alpha channel.

Dust removal is possible, apparently, with a GIMP plugin, also found
on the coolscan backend www site, but it doesn't work with GIMP 1.2.x
(maybe it was written for 1.0.x).

Anyway, I'm working on a new coolscan driver:

It is not yet functional, so please don't mess with it unless you know
what you are doing. It will eventually support automatic dust removal,
alongside other useful functions (like the automatic strip feeder).
