Scanner code at http://www.gordian.com/~nathan/linux.html is almost
usable - you can specify resolution and scan size, and it outputs a color
PPM file.  

The code now uses the standard ioctl SCANNER_IOCTL_CTRLMSG added in Kernel
2.4.12; you can just copy that code into your 2.4.9 version and it works
fine.
