I have a similar problem with the mustek_usb backend and FreeBSD. I
can read and write some registers but then the USB system (or the
scanner) just hangs. If I kill the backend and start it again, it
blocks right at the first read. If I remove the USB cable, the kernel
prints messages about device problems and disables the USB port.
