I'm referring to XSane version 0.84.

If I set preferences->filename counter length to 10 (or inactive),
nothing is truncated. If I set step to 0, the counter isn't
incremented.

I only get the underrun error when I use a filename of 0000000000.png and
a step of -1. But the filename just stays the same. If I enter a
random new name, no underrun occurs.

I have no idea why I can't reproduce your problem. Did you also use
version 0.84?
