I couldn't read much in your dmesg because the line wrap was hosed
completely. Well, it's a Windows mailer :-)

Anyway, this looks ok:

It should be detected automatically but you can also double-check that
/dev/scanner is in hp.conf (probably in /etc/sane.d/).

Uhh, there have been some reports of ide-scsi making trouble. Try
rmmod ide-scsi.

Try "SANE_DEBUG_HP=255 scanimage -L"

and post the debug output.
