That's a fair enough response for development code, but I hope we
agree that *any* segfault under conditions that can be detected with
software (i.e. anything other than intermittent hardware faults), is a
bug.

I think perhaps you just answered your own question -- the major/minor
device numbers already indicate what the device type is.  Can we query
the kernel for information on the device numbers to see what the bus
type is?
