I can't reproduce this here:
device mustek:/dev/sg0' is a Mustek ScanExpress 12000SP Plus flatbed scanner

I'm using Linux 2.4.17-rc1 (no devfs). I have the following line in
modules.conf:

alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx

I have no link /dev/scanner.

aic7xxx and sg are loaded when sane-find-scanner is called. It takes
about 10 seconds but the result is ok. Maybe in your case sanei_scsi
runs into a timeout?

Does the first "scanimage -L" print both /dev/scanner and /dev/sg0?

You may get more info with "SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_SCSI=255 sane-find-scanner".

Bye,
