Two problems:

* The tamarack baceknd is unmaintained and mostly unchanged for years. So if
  you want changes to the code it's upt to you :-)

* The ncr5380 SCSI adapters are slow. Especially in combination with its Linux
  driver. They are faster with Windows (at least 95), but also not really fast.

There are some tricks that may or may not help a little bit. Some of them are
summarized at http://www.meier-geinitz.de/sane/docu.html#SCSI . They are
related to Mustek scanners but they use the same SCSI adapters.
