Yes, that's one of the reasons why most people don't like the parport.
The best starting point is probably the mustek_pp backend. I'm not the
Mustek parport specialist (Jochen Eisinger is :-) so I can only say:
I'm not working on this scanner and I don't know anyone who is. The
SANE projects file also has no entry for your scanner.

Could you go into more detail which documentation you are missing?
In my humble opinion there is much documentation.  A tutorial, an FAQ,
man pages, web site links and so on.

Additional documentation (or links) are always appreciated.

For discussions on "simple configuration interfaces" have a look at
the mailing-list archive.  Please keep discussions about what the
Linux community must do from this list.  sane-devel is about SANE not
Linux. Yes, I have seen the smily but you never know...
