Okay, I just upgraded to:

sane-backends-1.0.7-6.1.i386.rpm
sane-backends-devel-1.0.7-6.1.i386.rpm

I will test the results tonight after I get home.  However, I don't think
"iscan" from Epson Kowa even uses the sane back-end, right?  Since both
applications appear to be having the same problem, I would assume my
problem is lower level than that.  :-(
