What's the USB ID of your scanner? It seems that some flavours of 620 / 640 
don't need the firmware upload. 

If you use a recent version of SANE / Snapscan backend, you don't need the 
acerfirm script anymore. See http://snapscan.sourceforge.net for details. The 
backend will determine automatically if the scanner needs a firmware upload.
