Do you mean that even when everything works the way it is supposed to, I
will only be able to scan in greyscale?

At the moment the results are the same whether or not I scan in color,
greyscale or lineart.  the xsane mode (viewer/copy/...) doesn't change
anything either, and the "force monochrome preview" doesn't help
either...

Thanks for helping me, any other suggestions?

I always test using the "acquire preview" that wouldn't make a
difference would it?
