[sane-devel] HP Scanjet 2100c - trying to get started

Hi

(I am a user not too familiar with SANE etc, so feel free to direct me to
another source of answers to this question if it is not appropriate to this
list.)

I am trying to get my HP Scanjet 2100c working on Linux using the Plustek
driver (SUSE 7.3, kernel I think is 2.4.10_4GB, SANE 1.0.8 downloaded as
RPMs). But it is not being recognised.

Here is what I have got set up:

/etc/sane.d/dll.conf has just the plustek line uncommented.

/etc/sane.d/plustek.conf says:
	/dev/usbscanner
	usb 03f0 0x505

/dev/usbscanner exists. It did have permissions rw-/---/--- but I have changed
these to rw-/rw-/rw-

If I type lsmod, I do not see the scanner (but I do see my keyboard, which is
also a USB device).

If I type xscanimage, it says "no scanners were identified" (and other stuff)

If I type sane-find-scanner, it also finds no scanners.

In /var/log/messages I get these seemingly USB-related lines:

Oct 10 10:03:32 linux kernel: uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0x1400, IRQ 11
Oct 10 10:03:32 linux kernel: usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus
number 1

Oct 10 10:03:32 linux kernel: uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0x1420, IRQ 11
Oct 10 10:03:32 linux kernel: usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus
number 2
Oct 10 10:03:32 linux kernel: hub.c: USB hub found
Oct 10 10:03:32 linux kernel: hub.c: 2 ports detected
Oct 10 10:03:32 linux kernel: uhci.c: :USB Universal Host Controller Interface
driver
Oct 10 10:03:32 linux kernel: hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/1,
assigned device number 2
Oct 10 10:03:32 linux kernel: usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x3f0/0x505) is
not claimed by any active driver.
Oct 10 10:03:32 linux kernel: hub.c: USB new device connect on bus2/2,
assigned device number 2
Oct 10 10:03:32 linux kernel: usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x49f/0xe) is not
claimed by any active driver.

Complication time! For a brief time yesterday, I seemed to be getting a bit
further than this (though xscanimage was still not believing in any
scanners):

Typing lsmod returned a line that said "usbcore 47264 1 [scanner hid usbkbd
uhci]". The usbcore line is still there but "scanner" is no longer mentioned.

When I typed sane-find-scanner it found "/dev/usb/scanner0" and
"/dev/usbscanner". Also, I got messages in the konsole when I did that:
"linux kernel: scanner.c: open_scanner(x): unable to access minor data" ("x"
was a digit; many such messages produced per run of sane-find-scanner).

I'm afraid I do not know what I did that stopped these things appearing nor
whether they are especially helpful.

Can anyone on this list give me any advice, please?

Thanks
Steve
