My personal experience is that the gt68xx based Mustek USB scanners
don't break that easy. Even when I let the motor move in the wrong
direction or bump the scan head at the end of the sscan area for
minutes I have never destroyed any scanner. But there are no
guarantees.

Mustek SCSI scanners are different: I've seen destroyed toothed weels
when the scanner moved to the end of the scan area.
