The USB mass storage protocol mostly does this, and even offers a
"transparent SCSI" mode. However, it has been designed to link single
devices -- not a complete SCSI bus -- to the USB bus, and with only
storage devices in mind. It may be necessary to slightly extend/violate
the protocol and (under Linux) hack the usb-storage driver a bit
to make a scanner work; I don't konw.
