Yes, I compiled 1.0.13 myself with
./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc

My system came with xsane 0.89

Funnily enough (on a related note), I saw that xsane is now up to 0.92. So, I downloaded the tarball from www.xsane.org and installed it.

The UI is drastically different. The buttons are all flat, there is no KDE theme applied, it looks very pale! Why is this?

./configure showed me that it did find all the necessary GTK/KDE libraries
