Linux crash == kernel bug. Do you get an oops (blinking leds in X, at
least with recent kernels)?

Try to change it (set SANE_SG_BUFFERSIZE variable).
As I don't know much about Avision scanners, I can only guess.

Did you try to disable calibration in avision.conf? Maybe that works
around the problem with the big buffer.
