I recently installed linux on my dad's old computer and he would like to
use sane to scan stuff with it.

The scanner can process grayscale, halftone, and lineart scans fine,
but when it comes to color scanning, there are all these bulk_msg
timeouts. What might be the problem? The scan ultimately fails with
"Device I/O error."

Sigh.. nothing ever works *quite* right the first time I try it ;[

I am using sane 1.0.9 with the hp backend.

Regards
-Josh
