Sounds like your distro decided to NOT link libpng with libz :-(
When testing iscan on TurboLinux 10, I ran into the same trouble.  The 
quick and dirty fix it to recompile iscan to link with -lz.  This will 
be fixed with iscan-1.6.x.

To be more specific, add " -lz" to LIBS in your ./frontend/Makefile.in, 
run './configure' and recompile.
