Isn't he talking about a SCSI scanner?

Maybe you can just add /dev/scanner to epson.conf by default? That's
only necessary for platforms like NetBSD where the "scsi ..." lines
don't work. It may also make sense to allow sane_open
("/dev/somedevice") even if /dev/somedevice wasn't detected before.
