I don't thin it's a problem of scanadf.

Try other frontends. Both xsane and scanimage are able to use ADFs, at
least that works with the ADF scanners I use. If it happens with those
programs, too, it's most probably a problem with the hpoj backend.
Contact the hpoj people in this case.
