[sane-devel] Ep_to_piperef error

I am using OS X (panther) to scan with a Epson
Perfection 1670. Things were working great with the
Epson Scan Utility (v. 1.28) and Image Capture in
batch mode. I had followed all the updates supplied by
Epson and their third party developer for the scan
Interface. Then I kept getting an error that the
scanner was not found. I repaired permissions,
uninstalled the drivers and software then
reinstalling. Still recieved the vaque error. So I
tried the Twain-Interface supplied by Mattias Ellert.
Previously I have used this interface with a HP 6200
with no difficulty. Now I get this error:
>scanimage > /scanIn/test.tif
Ep_to_piperef: Error occured getting pipe information
on pipe 1

Does anyone have an idea what this means?
