If you are using sane-backends 1.0.14 installed (scanimage --version)
disable the epson backend in dll.conf by placing a # before epson or
update to 1.0.15
See SANE bugreport 300751 for reason

Also check if permissions of ls -l /proc/bus/usb/001/003 are at least
rw-rw-   (001/003 is your scanner)
