Me too get's these errors when trying to scan with my new Mustek Bearpaw
2448 TA Plus.

root@jazz ~ # sane-find-scanner
[...]
found USB scanner (vendor=0x055f, product=0x021a, chip=GT-6816?) at libusb:003:005
[...]
root@jazz ~ # scanimage -L
device `gt68xx:libusb:003:005' is a Mustek BearPaw 2448 TA Plus flatbed scanner

The device even doesn't twitch or flash when plugging it on or off of power or
USB. Shouldn't it show any sign of life?
