Your messages misses all the information we need to diagnose your 
problem (platform, scanner in use, ...).

So you should have included that you run Mac OS X 10.3 on a G5. That 
sane-find-scanner can find your Epson Scan 2500 via usb. But when you 
run xsane (0.96) it exits with 138 and prints "Bus error" a second or 
two later. And that the TWAIN bridge works e.g. from M$ Word ...

Someone else suggested it might be a G5 specific compiler flag missing ...

So much to HOWTO write a bug report.
