What does:

SANE_DEBUG_AVISION=3D7 scanimage -L

yield?

Oh - you have the hpusbscsi module loaded. It is not very stable and
therefore deprecated ... I had an report that it caused problems and
locked up by another person just some days ago.

Do you have libusb installed on your system?

ls -l /usr/lib/libusb.so

(rpm -q libusb or so - but I'm not used to rpm so --typos)
