Ok, I just noticed today that, despite using custom
kernel 2.6.9, my scanner won't work with xsane(.92
w/.14 backend). I had to manually add
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs
 defaults,devmode=0666 0 0

to fstab

It lists it after taking a VERY Long time(didm't used
to take that long), along with my usb camera device,
as

Epson Perfection 1250/usb flatbed scanner
[plustek:libusb:001:012]

When I try to scan, it says device busy

and dmesg has the following after a scan
usb 1-4.1: usbfs: interface 0 claimed while 'xsane'
sets config #1
usb 1-4.1: usbfs: interface 0 claimed while 'xsane'
sets config #1
usb 1-4.1: usbfs: interface 0 claimed while 'xsane'
sets config #1

also

ehci_hcd 0000:00:10.3: qh ded3b680 (#18) state 1
usb 1-4.1: bulk timeout on ep2in
usb 1-4.1: usbfs: USBDEVFS_BULK failed ep 0x82 len 1
ret -110
usb 1-4.1: bulk timeout on ep2in
usb 1-4.1: usbfs: USBDEVFS_BULK failed ep 0x82 len 4
ret -110

I don't know if it matters that I don't see scanner
w/lsusb, and /dev/usb, for some reason now, is empty
aside from lp0.

there is this section in /proc/bus/usb/devices
