This seems to be a peculiarity of Epson scanners. The same is reported 
for the 1670, but I haven't seen it on my Acer scanner.

There's no command I know of to switch off the lamp. My scanner does 
it automatically after some time of inactivity. If there is one for 
Epson scanners it should be easy to find out using an USB sniffer on 
Windows.
