[sane-devel] libusb scanner not found

This used to work (under FC1/2.4), but no longer does under Fedora Core
2 (Linux 2.6). I'm running sane-backends-1.0.14-3 on an Athlon (single
processor).

I have an Epson Perfection 2450. I can see it with lsusb or
sane-find-scanner, but scanimage -L or xsane will fail to open it.

/etc/sane.d/epson.conf only has one uncommented line:
usb

If I run this (as root or user):
[root@MacCready dev]# SANE_DEBUG_EPSON=9 SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=9 scanimage -L

I get this (excerpts):
... (this block shows up multiple times (probably for each backend))
[sanei_usb] sanei_usb_init: found libusb device (0x04b8/0x0112) interface 0
at libusb:001:007
[sanei_usb] sanei_usb_init: device 0x0000/0x0000 looks like a root hub
[sanei_usb] sanei_usb_init: found 1 devices
...
[sanei_debug] Setting debug level of epson to 9.
...
[epson] sane_init, >usb<
[epson] sane_init, >usb<
[epson] attach(usb)
[epson] SANE Epson Backend v1.5.0ek - 2002-12-02
[epson] attach(usb)
[epson] attach: opening usb
[epson] sane_start: open (USB) failed: No such file or directory
...
[epson] sane_get_devices()
...

The device appears to be there, but then the backend doesn't recognize it.

Why isn't it recognizing the scanner any more?

-Dan

PS. Here is what lsusb returns:
