i've got the subject scanner along with the user manual. nikons name
for the unit is scantouch. this unit also has the ax-45 transparency
cover plate (which includes a lamp etc).

i'm unable to get any information on the scsi interface protocol from
nikon, the user manual includes this information:

scsi-2 interface
twain compatible
color separation: surface sequence 3 pass method
scanning area: 8.5 x 14 in (216 x 356 mm)
optical res: 565 x 1200 dpi
compensation res: 1200 x 1200 dpi
assign res: 15 - 1200 dpi
a/d conv: 10bit/color
output data: monochrome, halftone (1bit), gray scale (8bit), full color (24 bit)
scanning mode: fast, normal, high-qual
max scan speed: 2 msec/line
sensor: 5000 pixel ccd linear

the scsi query reponses with:
[coolscan] 000: 06 00 02 02 1f 00 00 00 4e 69 6b 6f 6e 20 20 20
[coolscan] 016: 41 58 2d 31 32 30 30 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 20
[coolscan] 032: 31 2e 30 30
[coolscan] get_inquiry_values
[coolscan] Found Nikon scanner AX-1200 version 1.00 on device
/dev/scsi/scanner/c1t5d0

few words about the platform:
ss-20 sparc, using sgen solaris 8
using gcc 2.95.2

at this moment i'm considering using either the umax or the coolscan backend
as a starting point.

any advice from those that have been there before will be appreciated

aloha
