I have to admit that I have never used ppscsi, anyway some comments:

aptitude search ppscsi
p kernel-patch-ppscsi-2.4 - patch to support SCSI emulation over para
p kernel-patch-ppscsi-2.6 - patch to support SCSI emulation over para
p ppscsi-source - drivers for SCSI emulating devices on par

The first one? Kernel was patches, built and installed successfully?

This is not normal. ppscsi makes parport devices visible as SCSI
devices and sane-find-scanner looks for SCSI devices.

So you should find out why your kernel does not find the scanner.

I think there is no need to do that. SCSI devices are detected by the
first line automatically.
