i have lobotomized this driver. the up2 version was just an attempt to get 
past the errors you were seeing before. i am not surprised that it does 
not actually work :)

there were several places in the code that openned and closed the sane 
handle to the device, so that you could do things like GHS before 
sane_open(). i cut out most of those rather than make them work in the 
short term.

i would say that your usage is correct, but the backend is broken.
