This scanner actually does work as you can see by looking at the
recent discussions on this mailing list.

The first problem is that you don't provide enough information :-)

What's the output of scanimage --version?
What's the output of "sane-find-scanner -v -v" as root?
What's the output of "scanimage -L" as root?
