I use the Astra 1200S in combination with a NCR 53c810 SCSI controller.
When it works, could you please try 
scanimage --resolution 600 --depth 10 -x 150 -y 297 >/dev/null
?
At a width > 144mm my scanner can't transfer the data fast enough and
does that typical jerky head movement. As this width corresponds to only
2MB/s, I wonder if it improves if I reduce the cable length (now:
Astra - 0,8m - older scanner as SCSI adapter - 2m - controller - 0,5m
- CD-ROM drive).
