Why don't you use the net backend? If the backend compiles on your target 
platform and the programming language you're using allows linking with a 
C-library, you'd better use it. There is also a Java implementation of the 
network protocol if I remember correctly. See man pages of sane-net and  
sane-dll for more info about configuring the backend. BTW, the protocol itself 
is described in detail in Chapter 5 of the SANE Standard.
