Thanks for prompt reply and thanks for the encouraging news.  I was not 
looking forward to throwing out a perfectly good scanner!

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

Does it mean that parport0 is the incorrect address?
Should I be using
 port 0x378
or
 port 0x38

Is 
 safe-port auto
more likely to work?
