Just a follow-up, in case anyone googles this thread...  The problem
is a "bug" in the epson backend in sane-backends-1.0.18, as documented
here:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=399119
Reverting to 1.0.17 or upgrading to debian's 1.0.18-4 fixes the problem.
