Alright.  I will take a good look at it and see if there's a way to
get at the chip seamlessly.  Otherwise I'm not going to risk it.  I
will just reassemble it and get a refund.

And Canon absolutely refuses to provide help with this?  That alone is
a good reason to take it back.  :-/

Does anyone know of another bus-powered scanner like this that is
well-supported?  Which manufacturers are most cooperative?

Powered through USB 2.0 port, no AC adapter required.									
Optical: 2400 x 4800 dpi
Color: 48-bit internal/48-bit external (selectable in driver)

It'll take a while to look through all the supported models' specs by hand...
