The problem also occurs on Linux (Ubuntu 7.04).  It ends with the output:

scanimage.o: In function `auth_callback':
/home/hugh/sane-backends/frontend/scanimage.c:291: undefined reference
to `md5_buffer'

The #define occurs in md5.h, and md5.c.
