[sane-devel] help getting started

Hi Everyone

This is my first post. I am hoping to assist in writing 
scanner/printer/vinyl cutter backends in Linux.

I was thinking about buying software form this company:
http://www.hhdsoftware.com/Products/home/usb-monitor.html

They have a closed source App that logs the communications between 
different USB device's and Windows. Once the commands are know 
presumably they can be ported to Linux.

Is there and open source equivalent for this program? Is this how the 
communications are normally captured? Is there and easier way to do this.
