your mechanism for setting up two copies is correct, but if you use
the -N option for diff, you wont have to include the separate tarball,
and -u replaces -r with some context. its gonna be long, so we use
gzip to help.

diff -N -u $CVS $NEW | gzip -c - > hs2p_patch.gz
