 	But I'm still puzzled by the following in the USB debug log:

	scanner seems to be selected:

location 0x438304768x
libusb/darwin.c usb_os_find_devices: Complete
but later there is:

libusb/darwin.c usb_os_find_devices: Found USB device on bus 0x436207616x: 
0x438304768x
libusb/darwin.c usb_os_find_devices: idProduct from iokit does not match 
idProduct in descriptor. Skipping device
libusb/darwin.c usb_os_find_devices: Complete

	which is definitely beyond my understanding.
