[sane-devel] SOLVED HP deskjet F4400 series

After all that trouble, the problem was very simple.
The hplip web site reported that I did not need to update my version to 
hplip-3.9.8.  However, on further reading I found on the same web site 
conflicting information.  So I ran the installer.  Had no problems.  
Then I ran hp-setup.  Then the scanner and Xsane worked like a charm.
