Ubuntu 10.04 ships with sane-backends 1.0.20.
The SX410 was added in sane-backends 1.0.21, to the epson2 backend.

The epkowa backend supports it as of iscan-2.20, released 2009-07-02.
You can get the latest iscan version 2.24.0 from

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and a bug was filed in Launchpad (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xsane/+bug/475185) but nobody could tell me which component was causing the problem so I thought I'll ask here.
