Hello Allan - Directing this at the list mgr for lack of another target ;-)

I'm attempting to utilize SANE backend for a HP5470c via USB to my G5 Mac @
10.5.8 (leopard).
I've installed it & I get a pref panel but it's only a list w/ckboxes for
the supported scanners & a
SHARE option window. I also have all the HP software installed (several
times & while power-cycling
the scanner as requested in the HELP section of HP's troublelshooting guide
{smirk-snarl} ) to no avail.
HP setup mgr can't detect the scanner device but it DOES see a printer which
I DON'T even have...
I have attempted to install Xscan - Xsane - Scanimage as stand alone
software or plug-ins for GIMP
(which I run thru X11 the application). Even though it shows up everywhere
nothing works anywhere...
I can occasionally get the scanner to do a test.pnm if I go thru the SANE
troubleshoot scenario in
command line thru Terminal as SUDO usr. WHEW...

HERE'S MY ?

Can or will anyone give me the .05 tour of how to get a FRONTEND or a GUI
onto my BACKEND so I can
get some idea of what the software is actually doing or needing to do. I
should say at the outset that the
HP54xxbackend doesn't really do what I need too anyway, it's just basic
functionality & I need the TMA
(transparency media adapter) function so I can scan my 35mm film - but I
thought if I could get it working
I could then try one of the other backends (actually just one - HP5590)
which does support the TMA device.

I'm NOT a code guy but I can follow basic instructions & I can't be the ONLY
Mac guy out there with this
problem so if whomever would be kind enough to just 'walk me thru the
install/setup process' I'd be more
than extremely grateful & so would some others of like kind. Any help is
appreciated & OH, btw I've tried
VueScan as well - it can't see the scanner either...

TIA - MUCH appreciative ;-)
