Perhaps just playing with the afe settings in the config file will be enough?

If not, so you will have to do some deep diving to find a solution.
Best place to start will be the source code for the backend, and
perhaps a trace of the windows driver in action using this:

What you are looking for is calibration scans. If the machine cannot
calibrate without the special sheet, you might need to add some code
to do this?
