SANE backends 1.0.23 was released 2012-08-19, well *after* Ubuntu
12.04.  The recently released Ubuntu 12.10 does have 1.0.23.  So
shankara has the choice of upgrading his Ubuntu to 12.10 (not an LTS
release by the way), or build from source.
