I found a message on this list from February describing a patch to SANE 
1.0.25.  If your copy of SANE includes this patch, you might try 
including SANE_USB_WORKAROUND=1 in your environment and see if that 
fixes your problem.

As for me, I picked up one of these off of eBay:

It combines an NEC USB 2.0 PCI controller chip with a TI PCI 
Express-to-PCI bridge.  Similar products (possibly with a different 
bridge chip) should work as well.

It arrived today.  I popped it in, moved the scanner over to it, and did 
a few scans with XSANE at different resolutions and color depths.  No 
failures at all.  For only $16 shipped, I'm willing to call this problem 
sorted. :-)
